Extraction of Potassium dichromate from chromite ore:

The process involves the following three steps:

FeCr2O4 + Na2CO3 + O2Fe2O3 + Na2CrO4 + CO2

Time Taken:00:00

Na2CrO4 + H2SO4Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O

Time Taken:00:00

Na2Cr2O7 + KCl →Na2Cr2O7 + NaCl

Time Taken:00:00

Reactions of Potassium dichromate:

1. When heated strongly, Potassium dichromate decomposes to form oxygen gas, Potassium chromate and Chromium trioxide:

K2Cr2O7 O2 + K2CrO4 + Cr2O3

Time Taken:00:00

2. Acidified Potassium dichromate oxidizes Potassium iodide into Iodine:

K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 + KI →K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + I2 + H2O

Time Taken:00:00

3. Acidified Potassium dichromate oxidizes Iron(II) sulphate into Iron(III) sulphate:

K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 + FeSO4 K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + Fe2(SO4)3 + H2O

Time Taken:00:00

4. Potassium dichromate reacts with Lead(II) nitrate to form yellow precipitate of Lead chromate :

K2Cr2O7 + Pb(NO3)2 + H2O →PbCrO4 + KNO3 + HNO3

Time Taken:00:00
